Iron Man Pressure is Nothing Compared to Drug Addiction
| Robert Downey Jr will be reprising his role as Iron Man for the sixth time in Captain America: Civil War and he can feel the pressure.
“Everybody rises from the ashes many times in a lifetime and at the end of the day, pressure is just pressure,” he added. “If I’m thinking in any morose way about yesterday, I’m just inviting a depressive attitude. If I’m concentrating on the things that are ahead of me that I have to do or what’s expected of me, I’m just going to be anxious.” Downey said “It was only a couple of clicks back I was wondering how I was going to pay my rent or if I’d ever be in a functional relationship.”
From washed-up drug addict to Iron Man
Not so long ago, Downey Jr was a poster boy for wasted talent. Broke and in and out of prison because of his self-destructive taste for booze and never-ending quantities of weapons-grade drugs, he was reduced at one point to earning eight cents an hour scrubbing pizza pans in the kitchen of the LA County Jail.
For a period in the 1990s and the early part of the next decade, the actor was considered a pariah and a laughing stock, despite (or perhaps because of) the fact that he had consistently hailed himself as the best actor of his generation after the intensity of his performances, not least in his Oscar-nominated role in the biopic Chaplin in 1992.
At his lowest ebb, he was found in the fetal position in a rat-infested alley behind a dingy LA hotel. During one of a litany of court appearances on drugs charges, he told a judge: ‘Taking drugs to me is like having a shotgun in my mouth with my finger on the trigger, and I like the taste of the gun metal.’
Robert Downey’s Road to Redemption and Iron Man
Downey’s road to redemption began in 2003. He started therapy, entered a 12-step program, took up meditation, the martial art Wing Chun Kung Fu; and described kicking his addictions as like coming out of a ‘20-year coma’. Now he says the strongest thing he consumes is espressos.
Addiction Recovery Step One: Overcoming Denial
“Job one is get out of that cave,” Downey said. “A lot of people do get out but don’t change. So the thing is to get out and recognize the significance of that aggressive denial of your fate, and come through the crucible forged into a stronger metal.”
If you watch the movies Downey has made since regaining his freedom, you realize that the best of them play as a re-telling of his own story: death and rebirth, a journey through a nighttime world, then redemption.
Iron Man Mythic Journey of Becoming – A Crucible of Change and Redemption
The prime example is Iron Man, mega-hit and sequels. Iron Man is tabloid Downey turned into parable:
Tony Stark, a billionaire industrialist, a man of private jets, drunken sprees, supermodels; who is led, by his arrogance, down the wrong path. His car is set upon by terrorists (just as the Malibu sheriffs once set upon Downey’s car in the hills). Stark makes a run for it, in his suit, but is caught, shackled, beaten, and confined to a cave where the only natural thing to do is die.
But Tony Stark doesn’t die. He’s rejuvenated. He comes out of the cave like a man from a cannon, in a suit of armor, devastating his enemies. He’s returned to his old life. Only now, like a hero in a folktale, he understands himself for the first time.

Arrowhead Lodge Recovery: Rehab for Mature Men
How is Arrowhead Lodge Recovery different? Many drug and alcohol rehabs make bold claims, but when an adult man over the age of 30 arrives at the facility, they often find themselves with young adults who simply don’t share their same level of commitment to recovery; or life experience.
Why Rehab for Men?
Take away the drugs and alcohol, and addicts and alcoholics typically resort to sex in an attempt to self-medicate.
In a co-ed drug and alcohol setting, most men try to impress the female clients and vice versa. Flirtatious communication between men and women not only distract them from the real issues, it can lead to other things.
Since Arrowhead Lodge Recovery is gender specific, distractions or temptations by the opposite sex are eliminated. This creates a safe environment in which our clients are able to lower their defenses so they can open up emotionally and start the healing process. Men need a safe place where they can explore painful personal issues and sometimes, fall apart. Being gender specific helps create that space.
