Fentanyl ‘Killer Pills’ – Counterfeit Hydrocodone Crisis
opioid addiction who have turned to illegal means to acquire opioids – there is now a new hazard.
Counterfeit medications and candies are raising new concerns and confusion in the opioid epidemic sweeping America. Counterfeit pain and anxiety medications laced with fentanyl started appearing in Florida in spring 2016. Now, the illegal ‘killer pills’ are causing overdoses across the US.
50 times more potent than morphine. Similar counterfeit pills, made to look like Norco hydrocodone medication, are the cause of at least ten deaths – and dozens of overdoses across the country.
Fentanyl poses a grave threat not only to users, but to anyone coming into contact with it. A lethal dose is possible with very small amounts. Fentanyl can accidentally be inhaled or absorbed through the skin from only a few grains of the substance.
Prince’s Death Caused by Counterfeit Fentanyl
Fentanyl, prescribed by doctors for cancer treatment, can be made illicitly and is blamed for a spike in overdose deaths in the United States.
Fentanyl is 25 to 50 times more potent than heroin and 50 to 100 times more potent than morphine, according to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.

DEA Report: Counterfeit Pills Fueling U.S. Fentanyl and Opioid Crisis
DEA Report: Counterfeit Pills Fueling U.S. Fentanyl and Opioid Crisis. Problems resulting from abuse of opioid drugs continue to grow. July 22, 2016, Drug Enforcement Administration Report
JUL 22, 2016 (WASHINGTON) – Hundreds of thousands of counterfeit prescription pills, many containing deadly amounts of fentanyl and fentanyl-related compounds, have made their way into the U.S. drug market, according to a DEA intelligence report released today. Law enforcement nationwide report higher fentanyl availability, seizures, and known overdose deaths than at any other time since the drug’s creation in 1959.
Hundreds of thousands of counterfeit prescription pills, some containing deadly amounts of fentanyls have been introduced into U.S. drug markets, exacerbating the fentanyl and opioid crisis. The sudden arrival of wholesale amounts of counterfeit prescription drugs containing fentanyls will result in an increase in overdoses, deaths, and opiate-dependent individuals. Motivated by enormous profit potential, traffickers exploit high consumer demand for prescription medications by producing inexpensive, fraudulent prescription pills containing fentanyls. DEA Intelligence Report, July 2016
Fentanyl is a synthetically produced opioid that, when produced and administered legitimately, is used to treat severe pain. Overseas labs in China are mass-producing fentanyl and fentanyl-related compounds and marketing them to drug trafficking groups in Mexico, Canada and the United States.
In addition to being deadly to users, fentanyl poses a grave threat to law enforcement officials and first responders, as a lethal dose of fentanyl can be accidentally inhaled or absorbed through the skin.
Cold Turkey Opiate Withdrawal Not Effective for Long Term Success
Without professional addiction treatment, users who suddenly quit opiates run the risk of serious complications. Opiate withdrawal can be painful and dangerous. This is the reason quitting cold turkey is rarely a successful approach to addressing opiate addiction. All the will power in the world can be overwhelmed by the painful side effects of opiate withdrawal.
Opiate Withdrawal Can Be Hazardous
Withdrawal is never comfortable, but it can actually be dangerous. Some drugs should NEVER be quit suddenly without medical supervision. Some methods of rapid-detox from heroin and prescription opiate addiction can cause serious side-effects; or even be deadly. This is the reason why Arrowhead Lodge Recovery rehab treatment is preceded by a medically supervised detox period lasting anywhere from 2 days to a week or longer. We use suboxone to ease symptoms and safely detox over time in a medically controlled environment.
In addition to serious withdrawal symptoms, a big risk during the detox period is relapse. People who quit cold turkey usually start off feeling determined. But once withdrawal sets in, they find themselves unable to continue.

At Arrowhead Lodge Recovery, we provide suboxone treatment as a medically supervised and assisted inpatient treatment program for heroin or opiate detox. Suboxone treatment usually lasts 30 days or less.
