Rehab for Boomer Men
Substance abuse, particularly of alcohol and prescription drugs, is one of the fastest growing health problems facing the country. Older adults and members of the baby-boom generation in their late 40s to their mid-60s who are addicted are seeking addiction treatment and getting sober late in life.
More Men Over the Age of 50 Seeking Addiction Treatment
A New York University study recently concluded that older adults are now the largest age group seeking help in narcotic painkiller and heroin treatment programs.
It is critical for older men to receive addiction treatment in a setting that is targeted for the unique psychological and health issues facing older men. Arrowhead Lodge Recovery is a gender specific rehab for men providing chronic alcoholism and addiction treatment for older men.
A mature man may not open up in rehab group therapy when he’s sitting in a group of single young adults who have not experienced life on their own; especially when early childhood trauma is involved.
An older man needs to feel safe before he can talk about deeply embedded emotions over the course of a lifetime and the trauma that created them.
Why Rehab for Men Only?
Take away the drugs and alcohol, and addicts and alcoholics typically resort to sex in an attempt to self-medicate. In a co-ed drug and alcohol setting, most men try to impress the female clients and vice versa. Flirtatious communication between men and women not only distracts individuals from core recovery issues, it can lead to personal relationships with negative outcomes for addiction treatment effectiveness.
Misuse and abuse of alcohol and other drugs takes a greater toll on older adults
Today, older adults are experiencing more stress. A 2011 “Stress in America” survey conducted by the American Psychological Association (APA) found that older adults are trying to cope with more life-stress than previous generations.
The results show stress is impacting health in particular among adults 50 and older. Alcohol abuse, for example, may accelerate the normal decline in physiological functioning that occurs with age (Gambert and Katsoyannis, 1995).
Resistance to Addiction Treatment
Many in the Boomer Generation have resistance to addiction treatment.
- Boomers grew up learning that addiction was ‘shameful’ and a private matter
- Many Boomers feel that receiving addiction treatment is shameful and avoid entering treatment
- Many times relatives are also ashamed of addiction issues and choose to ignore them
- Boomer Men taught to ‘tough it out’ and ‘walk it off’ avoid addiction treatment
- Ageism at addiction treatment centers contributes to negative outcomes during addiction treatment
Addiction Treatment Challenges in Older Men
- Lack of awareness
- Comorbidity (presence of one or more diseases or mood disorders)
- According to one study, 30 percent of older alcohol abusers have a primary mood disorder (Koenig and Blazer, 1996).
- Significant life stresses; including over-work
- Strongly held belief that ‘personal problems’ are best kept secret and handled only by the individual
